Background

Kolkata-based Texmaco Rail & Engineering Limited has announced a joint venture with US-based TrinityRail and French firm Touax to build a high-tech rail freight ecosystem in India. The companies made the announcement this week.

Under the joint venture, Texmaco holds a 34 per cent stake, while Paris-headquartered Touax also controls 34 per cent. Dallas-headquartered TrinityRail owns the remaining 32 per cent. Texmaco and Touax share a long-standing business partnership, whereas TrinityRail joins the platform as a new entrant.

The three firms plan to jointly invest in 100 new rakes over the next three to five years, an investment estimated at around Rs 1,800 crore at current market prices.

Texmaco Chairman Saroj Kumar Poddar said the joint venture marked a significant milestone in the company’s journey to build a future-ready rail freight ecosystem for India. He noted that the partnership combined India’s manufacturing strength, Europe’s leasing and asset management expertise, and North America’s advanced rail engineering capabilities to create an integrated platform covering design, manufacturing, financing, leasing, maintenance and lifecycle engineering. He added that India’s push to raise rail’s share in freight movement from 27 per cent to 45 per cent under the National Rail Plan made technology-led rail solutions increasingly necessary.

Touax Group CEO Fabrice Walewski said the venture marked a new phase for the company in India, with shareholders committed to investing in 100 rakes to support the country’s growing freight ecosystem.

The new structure builds on the existing Touax–Texmaco Railcar Leasing platform. Texmaco Vice Chairman Indrajit Mookerjee and TrinityRail Chief Investment Officer Patrick Hurst also welcomed the collaboration, calling it a step towards safer and more cost-effective freight transport solutions.
