Background
Deep-tech startup Blurgs AI has raised $2.2 million in a funding round led by Pravega Ventures and Shastra VC, aimed at accelerating the global expansion of its artificial intelligence platforms for defence, national security and commercial maritime markets.
Angel investors Suraj Nalin, co-founder of PlaySimple Games, and Yashwanth Madhusudhan, co-founder of Fyle, also took part in the round.
Blurgs AI’s platforms are used by organisations including the Indian Navy, the Indian Coast Guard, Bharat Electronics, Defence Research and Development Organisation laboratories, Mumbai Port Authority, Dubai Maritime City and The Nature Conservancy. The company built this customer base before raising institutional funding.
The startup works across two areas. Its commercial maritime platforms offer operational intelligence for ports, fleets, shipyards and fisheries through real-time visibility and regulatory compliance. On the defence side, its AI systems support threat detection and situational awareness.
Roshan Raj Mohanty, co-founder and chief executive officer, said the oceans were becoming more connected and contested, and that the company was building deep-tech platforms from India to help nations and enterprises operate with greater confidence.
Avinash Kori, co-founder and chief scientist, said the company applied scientific rigour to critical decision-making, helping users understand situations and act with confidence.
A Pravega Ventures spokesperson called India’s coastline a strategic asset, adding that the technology addressed a problem the world needed solved. Vasant Rao of Shastra VC said Blurgs AI was building an intelligence layer for mission-critical environments.
The company said the funds would strengthen its technology, grow its team and support international expansion.
