Tees Active has completed a major £1 million upgrade of its gym at Billingham Forum, marking one of the most significant investments in the organisation’s push to elevate fitness facilities across Stockton-on-Tees.
The gym got £300,000 of new equipment, a 50% bigger workout area, and a new studio for group classes. With support from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, the aim is to offer modern and affordable fitness facilities for everyone.
On December 7, Tees Active celebrated the opening with a free weekend for residents and members to see the new gym and studio.
Tees Active’s Managing Director, Leon Jones, highlighted the organisation’s mission behind the investment. He said the upgraded facilities reaffirm Tees Active’s belief that communities deserve premium fitness experiences without the costs associated with high-end private gyms. “We reinvest every penny back into our services,” he said, adding that Billingham Forum now sets a new standard for public-sector fitness facilities.
Councillor Nigel Cooke, Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Culture, emphasised the council’s shared commitment to improving health and wellbeing. He noted that the enlarged gym and purpose-built studio will allow more residents to stay active while future-proofing the centre for years to come.
Early feedback from members has been overwhelmingly positive. According to Nadine Corner, Health and Wellbeing Manager at Tees Active, the additional space and brand-new equipment have opened up greater flexibility in training options. She said the new layout delivers a bold, modern look that sets the facility apart from other gyms in the area.
The upgraded gym now has modern equipment, and memberships include access to three other gyms, four swimming pools, and the area’s largest schedule of fitness classes.
This investment shows Tees Active’s ongoing commitment to public leisure, giving residents a high-quality fitness experience at an affordable price.
