Key Background

In a heated exchange of political temperatures on the technology industry, America’s ex-President Donald Trump yesterday called on Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan to resign in an instant. Trump, posting on his Truth Social platform, accused Tan of possessing conflicting interests, even though he did not present any evidence to back his assertion.

The remarks come after Republican Senator Tom Cotton had written to Intel’s board questioning Tan’s leadership experience in the past at Cadence Design Systems. Cadence has been reported to have conducted business with a Chinese military-linked university during Tan’s tenure, Cotton said. The senator also raised Tan’s overall investments and business relationships in China for potential national security issues.

Tan took over as Intel’s CEO in March and has moved fast since then to reorganize the firm. His master plan is to cut jobs drastically, delay some planned expansion of manufacturing plants, and put on the block non-core operations. These are all aimed at streamlining Intel’s engineering focus and its competitive base in a challenge to AI chip giants like Nvidia and AMD.

Despite major internal reorganization, Intel is still a major player in American semiconductor policy. It will be getting nearly $8 billion in funding from the CHIPS and Science Act to expand production and advanced packaging capacity in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, and Oregon. The investment is at large the center of American initiatives to divest foreign-produced chips and expand domestic capacity, and as such political scrutiny of Tan is particularly significant.
