Background

OpenAI launched its Sora app for Android users in seven countries: the U.S., Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The app allows users to create short AI-generated videos and share them online, similar to TikTok.

Sora came out on iOS in September and quickly became popular, reaching 1 million downloads in just a week. OpenAI expects even more people to try the app now that it is on the Google Play Store.

The Android version offers the same features as iOS, including “Cameos”, a tool that lets users create videos of themselves doing various actions using AI. People can share videos on a feed where others can watch and interact with them. This shows that OpenAI wants to compete with platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Meta’s Vibes in short-form videos.

After Sora was available on iOS, a few users made disrespectful deepfake videos of Martin Luther King Jr. and other historical figures. OpenAI disabled this content and implemented stronger safety rules. The company also changed its policy for copyrighted characters; now, rights holders must opt in if they want their characters to appear in videos.

OpenAI is also dealing with a legal dispute with the celebrity video platform Cameo over the use of the name for Sora’s feature.

Looking ahead, the company plans to add new tools, including options to make videos featuring pets or objects, basic editing tools, and personalized feeds focused on selected creators.
