Apple will Allow Reader Apps to Sign up New Subscribers without Paying Extra Fees

Apple said on Wednesday that reader apps will be allowed to use external links inside their applications to allow users to manage or sign up their accounts.

Apple said that the move applies to applications that provide newspapers, magazines, books, audio/music or video content. Reader apps consist of the most famous apps on Apple’s App Store, including Netflix and Spotify.

The new policy will be available globally. Apple will allow reader apps to bypass Apple’s payment by linking out to an external website for signing up new subscribers.

The rule is not applicable to all apps. Games that offer in-app purchases will still have to pay fees by using Apple’s payment system.
