Background
French rail transport company Alstom has signed a contract worth €500 million to supply 26 additional Coradia Max double-decker trains for the German state of Baden-Württemberg. The company confirmed the agreement on Thursday, marking another major step in its expansion within the German rail market.
Alstom will manufacture and deliver the new trains and maintain the fleet for 30 years, with service continuing until the end of 2055. The long maintenance term highlights the state’s focus on reliability, safety, and long-term performance of its regional rail services.
According to Alstom, delivery of the newly ordered double-decker trains will take place from mid to late 2028. These trains will build on the company’s earlier Coradia Max orders for the region. Passengers will start using the first double-decker Coradia Max trains in December 2026, opening the way for more trains in the fleet.
The Coradia Max trains serve regional and suburban routes. Their double-deck design carries more passengers. They improve comfort, efficiency and accessibility, while helping Germany boost public transport and cut road traffic emissions.
Alstom said the latest order reinforces its strong partnership with transport authorities in Baden-Württemberg and underlines growing demand for modern, high-capacity rail solutions. Alstom sees Germany as a key market in Europe and supplies a wide range of trains and rail services across the country.
The new agreement strengthens Alstom’s presence in Germany. Alstom is expanding its Coradia Max fleet to carry more passengers and support sustainable travel. The deal also gives Alstom long-term business through the extended maintenance contract.
