Background
AI coding startup Cursor will establish its European headquarters in London and expand its regional workforce as demand for AI-powered software development tools continues to grow across Europe.
The San Francisco-based company plans to hire around 200 employees across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) by the end of the year, up from its current workforce of about 70 to 80 staff in the region. The expansion comes as businesses increasingly adopt artificial intelligence tools to automate coding, accelerate software development and modernise legacy systems.
London was chosen, according to company leaders, because it has access to bilingual specialists and a large talent pool in technology. The city offers a strategic base from which Cursor can support customers across multiple European markets. In addition to its London headquarters, the company plans to open smaller offices in Paris, Munich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Stockholm.
Founded in 2022, Cursor has experienced rapid growth. The company reported annualised business-to-business revenue of approximately $2.6 billion, driven by increasing enterprise adoption of its AI-powered coding platform. Major businesses from a variety of sectors, including aviation, energy, telecommunications, and healthcare, are among its clients.
Cursor’s software allows users to generate computer code through natural language prompts, helping developers build applications more efficiently. The company said many customers are also using the technology to upgrade older software systems and improve productivity.
Executives observed that more and more European companies desire data to stay in the region, especially in regulated industries with stringent privacy and compliance regulations. Establishing a stronger local presence is expected to help meet those demands.
Cursor operates in a highly competitive market, competing with AI coding tools from major technology companies while differentiating itself through a model-agnostic approach that allows customers to choose from multiple AI systems.
