The Biden administration is anticipated to announce this week a diplomatic withdrawal from the 2022 Winter Olympics, a senior person from the Biden administration said on Sunday.
A diplomatic pull-out from the Olympics means U.S. athletes can participate and compete in the games but no officials from the U.S. government would attend the games. There will not be a complete boycott of the event.
The Biden government is anticipated to take such a decision because of pressure from lawmakers for instituting the diplomatic withdrawal. US lawmakers want to demonstrate a stand against the human rights abuses of China.
President Joe Biden also expressed in the last month that his government was considering the shift to this move.
“We have serious concerns about the human rights abuses that we’ve seen,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said last month.
