Amtrak is set to invest $7.3 billion to manufacture 83 new trains for interstate and northeast routes. It is expected to serve around 1.5 million riders annually. Siemens Mobility Inc. has been contracted to produce new train fleets that would modernize and sustain Amtrak services.
Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn said, “These new trains will reshape the future of rail travel by replacing our aging 50-year-old fleet with state-of-the-art, American-made equipment.”
These trains will use less energy and rely on hybrid battery operation. Amtrak also stated that the project would create 2,100 jobs at a Sacramento-based Siemens plant.
